The White Mountain region’s ties to skiing’s highest levels run deep. Local Nordic centers have hosted international races and national championships, trained athletes who went on to represent the United States, and introduced countless young skiers to the sport.
Sean Doherty, three-time US Olympic Biathlon Team Member, born and raised in Conway NH, knows exemplifies this. He shared, “I am grateful that growing up skiing in the Valley, I was able to discover my love for skiing. No matter how adverse the weather or technical the downhill, I can say there are no conditions or courses that I race now that I did not experience first in the Mt. Washington Valley. Having skied all over the world, I am proud to say, these will always be my home trails.”
Cory Schwartz, retired Ski Program Director and Head Coach of the University of New Hampshire Nordic Ski Team, stated, “The cross country centersin NH’s White Mountains offer the variety of terrain and reliable snowfall that inspire skiers at all levels from first timers to top racers; skiing is New Hampshire’s official state sport, and the University of New Hampshire Nordic Ski Team heads to the White Mountains to train and race. Competitive cross-country skiing includes hours of trail time, and here you will find trails that make you want to see what ‘s around the next corner, whether your goal is winning or a cup of hot cocoa.”
